Orlando, FL – A child was killed earlier this week on Interstate 10 while returning home to Orlando with his family after evacuating from Hurricane Irma.
At about 1:30 a.m. this past Sunday a semi truck rear-ended a vehicle that had a family of seven inside. The fatal car accident killed nine-month-old Javarien Grier, according to WKRG.com.
Grier’s mother and his five siblings had been staying with a family member in Louisiana because their Orlando home had lost power during Hurricane Irma.
Derreona McCoy, the child’s mother, recalls looking in her rear view mirror and not seeing any lights, only to look back up again and “see lights, and boom.”
The car accident in Florida could have been much worse had a good samaritan not jumped into help.
A man who had pulled over after seeing the car accident helped McCoy take the rest of her kids outside of the car. As soon as they finished, the entire vehicle immediately shot up in flames.
The mother further shares that had the mystery man not been there, she would not have been able to get her kids out of her vehicle in time. She recalls that since the seats were on top of he kids, the man was able to push her entire truck and seats all the way to the front, which allowed him to free the rest of her children, and ultimately she their lives.
McCoy reflects on the ordeal by sharing that she is “so thankful that he was strong enough” to help her. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to pull her children out by herself.
Currently, her five-year-old daughter has been discharged from Sacred Heart Hospital. Her seven-year-old son, Desni, is still hospitalized for brain injuries.
